Job Title: Teaching Artist
Location: Washington, D.C., Virginia, and Maryland areas
Position Overview:
Canady Foundation for the Arts seeks passionate and experienced Theatre based Teaching Artists to join our dynamic team focused to empower youth of color, ages 3-18. Teaching Artists are contracted on a freelance, per class, basis, and work a variety of schedules based on semester needs and teacher availability. Both weekday and weekend hours are available. This role embodies CFA's mission to promote inclusion, diversity, equity, and access through theatre arts education while fostering a love for the arts within underserved communities.
Key Responsibilities:
Facilitate Arts Education: Design and lead interactive workshops and classes that engage students in creative expression, focusing on theater, storytelling, writing, and literacy.
Mentorship: Provide guidance and support to youth, encouraging their artistic growth and personal development in a safe and nurturing environment.
Community Engagement: Build strong relationships with students, parents, schools, and community organizations to promote CFA programs and initiatives.
Collaboration: Work with CFA staff, teaching artists, and board members to support program initiatives and organizational capacity-building efforts.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Arts Education, Fine Arts, Theater, or related fields (or equivalent professional experience).
At least 2 years of experience as a teaching artist, educator, or performer working with youth, particularly in underserved communities.
Excellent communication and facilitation skills with the ability to adapt to diverse learning styles.
Flexibility to travel within the Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia areas.
Preferred Skills:
Experience incorporating African Diaspora heritage and social justice themes into arts programming.
Familiarity with program evaluation and outcome analysis.
Background in music, dance, puppetry, healing arts, or interdisciplinary arts.
Compensation:
Compensation is competitive and commensurate with experience.
